Message from the CEO at the Welcome Ceremony for Fiscal 2011 (Abstract)

Welcome on board, everyone.

You have entered the business world at a time when Japan faces a national crisis, whether it is for better or for worse remains to be seen, but this timing will significantly affect your life.

Our company had managed to survive the global recession caused by the subprime loan crisis in the United States and was about to dash forward to expand our business further when the series of disasters struck the country. Domestic and global economies will unavoidably suffer a temporary setback.

Notwithstanding the adverse conditions, I am confident that we can overcome this hardship by steadily going about our business in accordance with our three-year mid-term plan launched last year. The mid-term plan emphasizes the following in addition to improvement in financial conditions, personnel development, and CSR activities:
1.Concentrate resources into organizations in charge of growth markets;
2.Strengthen businesses in which we are the No. 1 manufacturer;
3.Accelerate overseas business expansion notably in China and Southeast Asia;
4.Develop new applications and products by combining elemental technologies; and
5.Contribute to environmental conservation by utilizing the properties of aluminum.

The society and the environment will demand increasingly varied approaches going forward. We must make a concerted effort to flexibly adapt to this changing business environment. Given the kind of situation we are in, you may be asked to carry out tasks you would not have to in peaceful times. You may have to work to the point of exhaustion. But you will not possibly see a more difficult situation for Japan in your lifetime. Learn how Japan and the Japanese overcome this crisis by direct experience and you will be ready to tackle any situation. As Shakespeare puts it, "Sweet are the uses of adversity." I hope every one of you will grow into a stronger, more mature person in addressing this crisis.

In difficult times like this, leadership plays an important role. With increased media coverage of statesmen, governors, corporate managers, and other leaders coping with challenges, now is the good time for you to build your own idea of leadership.

In managing the Group, I always aim to "Create a workplace where everyone assumes responsibility and takes pride in one's work and where everyone can demonstrate their abilities in a relaxed manner," as set forth in the Three Pillars of the NLM Group. I ask you to bear this policy in mind at all times.

Let us put our knowledge and strengths to good use to rebuild the country.
