Capacity expansion of high purity alumina manufacturing facilit

Nippon Light Metal Company Ltd. (President Takashi Ishiyama; headquartered in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) has completed the capacity expansion work for the high purity alumina manufacturing facility in our Shimizu plant (Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture) and held a ceremony for the completion on September 13. As a result, the annual production capacity of high purity alumina in the plant increased from 300 tons to 1,000 tons. The plant will start full-scale operation in October.

In the past, high purity alumina is used as raw materials for ceramics, fluorescent materials, etc. In recent years, the demand for this as raw material for the sapphire substrate of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) where demand has rapidly increased for illumination equipment and liquid crystal panels. Consequently, inquiries for high purity alumina as raw material from domestic and foreign sapphire manufacturers are increasing. In order to deal with these needs, we decided to expand capacity in September of last year and started the expansion work. We have constructed high purity aluminum hydroxide manufacturing lines, kilns, auxiliary equipment, etc., with an investment of approx. 2.3 billion yen.

NLM will further increase the number of product types using high purity alumina by providing high bulk density products to enable customers to realize more efficient production in the the LED sector where demand is expected to further increase hereafter.
